To me, the town of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle is all about the restored, medieval castle of Château de Castelneaud sits high above the Dordogne River and it is definitely worth a visit. But as a result, it is over run with tourists so if you want to visit, get there early or late in the day. These villages are exceptionally attractive, yes, but they also have to prove themselves on numerous criteria such as heritage and protected monuments, population size, urban quality and more.

While Paris, Bordeaux, and Lyon are grand and have much to see, many visitors often overlook the small towns in France and these are definitely worth a detour. What a sweet quest.
I had to look up Gerberoy and I see I could have visited on my way to/from Etretat. Very quiet town but has some pretty stores and restaurants and some castle ruins with a good view of the valley. Below the church, a delightful formal botanical garden filled with Mediterranean scents and colours adds a cheerful note.The village hiding behind the church is delightful, with vaulted passageways connecting certain of the old streets.

Accompanied by a rose wine and finished with an espresso, I had NO complaints for this 20 Euro meal. It’s interesting: as a Brit, I really haven’t spent much time exploring France, preferring to go further afield. There are certain criteria that these villages must adhere to. South of Saint Malo in Brittany is the picturesque fishing port of Saint Suliac. I think you’re off to a great start Jan! Italy, Spain, Japan & the French-speaking province of Quebec (Canada) have since launched similar associations, under the umbrella of Les Plus Beaux Villages de Terre (the most beautiful villages of the world). The impressive fortified chateau is a must-see and if you can, try to visit during the low season as it gets incredibly busy during the summer months and school holidays. At the moment there are 155 villages in the scheme with 152 in mainland France, 2 in Corsica and one on the Island of La Réunion in Dom-Tom. What a treat! Today, it is still a fishing port and one that is used recreationally. Really helpful. It was here, in 1978, that I tasted truffles for the first time in my life! Was a nice surprise for me.
